“Drag your thoughts away from your troubles…
by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it.”
Another lesson learned while writing for a newspaper: Marketing, even simple emails, pays off.
For the eighteen months I wrote for the newspaper, I talked with almost every pastor in Cass County, their secretaries, wives and congregation. Every week I added phone numbers and emails to my list of contacts.
When my articles were published in a Cup of Comfort Devotional for Mothers, I called and emailed pastors telling them about my book signing in a little town near them. Three people responded specifically to those calls.
Now that doesn’t sound like a lot when you live in Omaha, but I spent four hours in a small bookstore where the owner says he doesn’t have foot traffic and most book signings sell 2 to 8 books. Thirteen people stopped by the store on that beautiful Saturday, and I sold a total of ten books. The next week the Plattsmouth Journal Editor wrote a nice article and added my photo. I felt like a celebrity.
Later when I published “Capsules of Hope: Survival Guide for Caregivers,” many of the pastors asked me to hold caregiving seminars in their churches. All those phone calls and emails did pay off.
